New Articles

Create a new article for an Indigenous author who isn’t on Wikipedia yet.

HIW has put together a list of Indigenous authors who do not already have articles written about them. As you create this article, keep in mind that Wikipedia strives to be an authoritative encyclopedia and has strict requirements about all information in an article needing reliable sources. They have put together a list of sources showing which ones are reliable, debated, and unreliable. They have also put together a list of external websites that should not (or only on specific circumstances) be linked to in an article. Wikipedia prefers sources which are:

  • Published
  • Academic/Peer Reviewed
  • Secondary sources (not from Publisher or personal website. These are fine for facts/quotes, but to be used sparingly)

However, Indigenous writer representation in Wikipedia-approved reliable sources is very limited and finding those citations in Wikipedia-approved locations requires a bit of extra work to find. Write what you can, and feel free to use the HIW templates in order to make the formatting easier.

Instructions

Find an author who needs an article written in our list of HIW authors.

  • Click on their name, which will be linked in red.
  • Find and click on the option to “Start the Amanda Grey article”.
  • Do research to find information about that author that would be good to include in their article.
  • Previous HIW participants, as well as some authors, have found and submitted research resources that can be used to edit the authors on our list. Check the author’s talk page or the HIW Start Your Research page to see if research resources have been included.
  • Have a look at non-stub Indigenous writers to see examples of articles. Examples of information are:
    • The titles of their works
    • Awards won
    • Articles written about them
  • Edit the page and write these new sections.
  • Publish Changes.
